Overview
In its nearly 150 years as a county, Mitchell County has had three courthouses. The first was a wooden structure located on the southwest corner of the present site. An artesian well pump marks the spot. In 1889 the frame building was replaced by a two-story red brick structure, complete with a front porch and rocking chairs. On April 21, 1936, the cornerstone was laid for the new present-day marble courthouse.
Courthouse 1895
This view of the courthouse was taken approximately 1895. Please note the horse and buggy. The source of this photo is the Camilla Enterprise Centennial Edition in 1957 (provided by the DeSoto Trail Regional Library).
Courthouse 1902
This is a view of the courthouse estimated to be taken in 1902. It was provided by the DeSoto Trail Regional Library. Upon extreme close-up, the date on the front of the building appears to show "1880" (which conflicts with the history showing that it was built in 1889).

Note the addition of the iron fence, the power pole in the front right of the photo, as well as the growth of the large tree on the right side of the courthouse from the prior picture. There are also three other unknown buildings shown in this picture. One is a small utility-looking building to the left, another is behind the courthouse appearing just to the right of the utility building, and the last is an old sagging one-story wooden building to the right, behind the trees. The nature and origin of these buildings are unknown.

Courthouse 1918
This photo is estimated to have been taken in 1918. It was printed in a book in the DeSoto Trail Regional Library of South Georgia photographs with a copyright date of 1918. Note the new gazebo, the new hedge, the change in the placement of the power poles, the street signs on the corner poles, and the new "keep right" signs and electric bulb in the center of the interchange. Also note the old jail in the background to the right. Barely visible in the left between the trees is the sign for "Acree Co. Buggies". We also see automobiles for the first time, to the right side near the jail.
Courthouse 1947
The current modern-day marble courthouse was built in 1937. This picture was taken in 1947.
Courthouse 2000
This picture was taken in 2000.
